Check the bottle and its original box
Inspect the base label, glass base and lower edges of the bottle, then the bottom and side panels of the carton. Look for a small stamped, etched or printed marking distinct from the main artwork. Keep the sprayer and packaging intact.
Glass reflections can obscure characters. Support the bottle on a table and photograph it with light from different directions. The faint-code guide explains how to preserve uncertainty instead of inventing missing characters.
Record the bottle and carton markings separately. If they differ, ask the brand to identify each one; a discrepancy alone does not tell you which explanation applies.
Exclude concentration, volume and retail identifiers
Eau de parfum, eau de toilette, parfum and similar wording identify the fragrance presentation. Numbers followed by ml or fl oz describe volume. Barcodes, product references and collection names help identify the item but are not substitutes for a batch number.
Keep these details for an enquiry, because the exact fragrance, concentration and size help the brand understand which product you mean. Enter only the candidate batch code into the checker.
Use the brand page and read its coverage
For a Dior fragrance, start with the Dior batch checker. For Avon, use the Avon batch checker. Check the page's examples and stated limits before interpreting a result; neither link promises coverage for every fragrance format.
For other brands, search the brand directory. If the brand or format is not supported, go to batch-code troubleshooting. Do not use another brand's result as a substitute.
Worked perfume label example
Le Labo Japan's official SANTAL 33 product image shows the label fields Compounded: in New York City and On: 01/20/16. In that documented example, the printed formulation date is January 20, 2016. This 50 ml example does not establish a rule for every Le Labo product.
To read the same format, open the Le Labo label checker and transcribe the full fields from your own current label. The checker accepts them as one line, Compounded: in New York City On: 01/20/16, for this example. Do not replace an unrelated short code with the example just to obtain a date.
Check the official SANTAL 33 labels and the refill FAQ: a new label on a refilled bottle gives the refill date. A readable date does not recover the original bottle's manufacturing history or provide an expiry date.
Original bottles, samples and decants
An original bottle and its carton provide packaging context. A decant is fragrance transferred into another container: a label applied by the seller may describe their own stock or transfer date rather than the original manufacturing batch.
For a decant, ask the supplier for the original bottle's product details and marking, plus the transfer date if available. Keep those as supplier-provided information. A batch estimate for the source bottle cannot reconstruct the transfer conditions or storage history of the decant.
For a miniature or sample, retain the original wrapper or card if available. Ask the brand which marking applies instead of assuming the retail bottle uses the same format.
Separate production age from condition and storage
A batch result is not an authenticity test or a universal fragrance expiry rule. Do not automatically add five or ten years to manufacture. Follow the label and the brand's advice for the actual product.
Keep the bottle closed and follow its storage directions, avoiding unnecessary heat and direct sunlight. A scent or colour change is information to report, but an unchanged scent is not proof of safety or authenticity.
If a date is ambiguous or the package raises a concern, contact the brand with photos. Include the full fragrance name, concentration, size, country of purchase and both bottle and box markings.
