We help you work out what the markings on a cosmetic package can tell you, what a date estimate means, and what to do when a checker cannot answer your question.
A checker and a guide to the next step
Choose a brand, locate the complete batch code, and check whether that format is supported. A supported rule can return an estimated manufacturing date or period. Some records apply only to a particular product, market, or historical batch; those limits appear with the guidance.
A listing in the brand directory does not mean every code from that brand can be decoded. When we do not have a supported rule, the brand page helps you check the printed expiry date, the period-after-opening symbol, and the official contact route.
Where the information comes from
Brand pages reference official FAQs, package-label instructions, and customer-service pages where available. General label guidance draws on sources such as the FDA’s explanation of cosmetic shelf life and Cosmetics Europe’s label guide. A rule for one brand, product, or market is not a universal rule for cosmetics.
Articles identify their sources and show when the content was revised. Source links let you check the original guidance for your product. A page update date describes our editorial revision; it does not imply that the manufacturer changed its formula or coding system that day.
What a result can and cannot establish
- A manufacturing estimate has limits. Some formats identify only a month or year. Repeating codes and unknown storage history can leave questions that require the manufacturer’s records.
- Manufacture, expiry, and opening dates are different. A shelf-life calculation uses stated inputs or assumptions. A PAO symbol starts from the actual opening date; it does not establish the date of manufacture.
- A code is not an authenticity test. Matching a format cannot prove a product is genuine. A missing result does not prove it is counterfeit.
- A date cannot certify condition. Follow the product’s printed instructions and expiry information. Ask the manufacturer about an unclear label or a product whose history you do not know.

Help us correct a page or investigate a format
Use the contact page to report an issue. Include the page URL, brand, product name, country of purchase, complete visible code, and what differed from the package or an official response. Clear photos of the code and surrounding label are more useful than a transcription alone. Remove your address, payment details, and unrelated personal information.
If you need the production date of your particular item, start with the brand’s official customer service. Our photo checklist and message template help you prepare an enquiry. We cannot access a manufacturer’s private production records or authenticate a purchase.
