MAC Batch Code Checker

Estimate a MAC production month, then check the usage and storage instructions for your particular makeup formula. Coverage is limited; results are estimates.

Usually found at the bottom of the packaging

Lookup coverage and limits

Recognized 3-character codes return an estimated month and year, not an exact day. Year codes repeat every decade. Results are not verified by MAC, and an older item can fit the same code.

Your next steps

Make sense of your MAC result

Use the estimate alongside the instructions on your own product.

  1. Keep the complete package code

Compare the container and carton. Record the letters, leading zeros and any separate printed date. Keep photos of both markings if they differ.

  2. Read expiry and opening instructions

An EXP or best-before date is different from a LOT code. The open-jar symbol gives months after first opening; it does not reveal when the product was manufactured.

  3. Check the estimate against your records

An estimate does not establish storage history or authenticity. If the date conflicts with your purchase history, keep the package details and ask the brand.

MAC batch dates and Paint Pot storage guidance

MAC's official Pro Longwear Paint Pot FAQ gives a practical example of formula-specific care: close the jar and use its on-pack opening period. This guidance does not set a shelf life for all MAC lipsticks, foundations or eye products.

Decoder coverage: Recognized 3-character codes return an estimated month and year, not an exact day. Year codes repeat every decade. Results are not verified by MAC, and an older item can fit the same code.

What the official source confirms

  • The Paint Pot FAQ directs users to the package's period-after-opening symbol.
  • Its storage advice is to close the jar tightly and keep it away from heat and direct light.
  • MAC provides product-advice and customer-service contact options.

What to check on the package

  1. Distinguish the batch marking from the makeup shade and product name.
  2. Read the PAO on the exact item; do not copy a period from a different MAC formula.
  3. Keep track of first use, especially for a jar that is repeatedly opened.

What is a MAC Batch Code?

A MAC batch code is a code used by the manufacturer to identify a production batch. It may help identify a production period when the manufacturer's coding rule is known, but the code is not automatically an expiration date.

The MAC batch code is different from the product's barcode. Barcodes are used for checkout and inventory management. Neither a barcode nor a plausible-looking batch code proves authenticity.

Where to Find MAC Batch Codes?

Bottom of bottle

Look for a printed or embossed lot code on the bottle base or label.

End of tube

Tube products usually have codes at the serrated seal on the tube end.

Outer packaging

Some products have batch codes printed on the bottom or side of the box.

Tip: Batch codes are usually inkjet printed or embossed with a tactile feel. If you can't find the batch code, check if the outer packaging is still available.

How to Check MAC Batch Codes?

  1. Find the batch code on your product using the location guide above.
  2. Enter the complete marking in the input box above, then choose Check.
  3. Read the estimated date, its precision and the product-specific limitations.
  4. Follow the printed expiry and PAO instructions; ask the brand if information conflicts.

Common questions

MAC Batch Code FAQ

Clear, practical answers for checking MAC production codes and shelf life.

Why can't I find my MAC batch code?

Find the short batch marking and keep it separate from the shade name or number. If it is missing, unclear or outside the supported format, send MAC the product name and package details for help; do not substitute a shade code.

Can MAC batch code checker verify authenticity?

A batch code cannot prove that a MAC product is authentic. Codes can be copied, and an unsupported or unreadable code does not by itself show that a product is counterfeit. Ask the brand about an uncertain purchase.

How should I check MAC shelf life?

For Paint Pot, MAC directs you to the PAO symbol and recommends closing the jar tightly after use and keeping it away from heat and direct light. For other MAC products, follow their own labels. The estimated production month is not a confirmed expiry date.

How to store MAC cosmetics to extend shelf life?

Follow the storage instructions on your specific MAC product. Keep the container closed as directed. Do not assume refrigeration is suitable unless the manufacturer recommends it.
